Construction on Sichuan province's largest ever sports complex got underway in Chengdu last month, with officials hoping that when complete it will be able to host top-level events on a par with the Olympics and Asian Games.

The 86-square-kilometer complex so far consists of 13 projects, including the construction of infrastructure, public services and supporting industries, with a total investment of 26.08 billion yuan (3.37 billion euros).

Chengdu is an important western hub for the opening-up of China. The city government has decided to improve it to the level of first-tier cities, such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

The government plans for Chengdu to become a world-class city in terms of sustainable development by 2050, according to the overall urban development plan of Chengdu (2016-35).

To realize this goal, Tianfu International Airport City, which is under construction, will play an important part. It is the location of the mega sports complex, which will feature a sports stadium, aquatic sports center and facilities for sports such as cycling, mountain biking and volleyball.

Construction on the 483 sq-km project, located 50 km from the center of Chengdu, began earlier this year. More than 100 infrastructure projects are underway at a cost of 150 billion yuan, according to a local official.

Revolving around a new airport, the project will actively promote an export-oriented economy with advanced international air and land transport infrastructure. The government expects the project to become an intelligent, innovative, low-carbon and livable destination.

By 2020 it is hoped to be home to developed airport-related industries, including international trade, logistics, exhibition services and airplane maintenance.

The Chinese headquarters of the International Council of Airshows has already settled in the city. The body has hundreds of members including Boeing.

ICAS has said it will hold more air shows, competitions, forums and training sessions in the city in the future.

With construction on the Chengdu Tianfu International Airport beginning in May 2016, Chengdu is set to become one of the few cities along with Beijing and Shanghai, to have two major international airports.

The first phase of the project is expected to complete in 2019, at which point the airport predicts it will transport 40 million passengers annually.

Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, which is currently in operation, said that it will increase its 106 international airline routes by a further 10 by the end of this year.

In the long run, the government expects the two airports to become the most important aviation hubs in western China with passenger capacity reaching 150 million people per year.
